In this lesson, students work with a situation to develop a deeper understanding about the relationship between arc length and central angle. Then they learn that the ratio of arc length to radius is called the “radian measure of an angle.” Students use string to measure arc length in terms of a circle’s radius, and they connect the results to the definition of the radian measure of an angle.
Students have an opportunity to reason abstractly (MP2) as they consider the connection between radian measurements and arc lengths.
Be prepared to display an applet for all to see during the Lesson Synthesis.
Students will continue adding to their reference chart in this lesson. Be prepared to add to the class display. The Blank Reference Chart for students and a teacher copy of a completed version are available in the blackline masters for the unit.
If there are multiple sections of this course in the same classroom, consider hiding entries on the class reference chart and revealing them at the appropriate time rather than making multiple displays.
