Goal: Recognize the intention behind the curriculum’s design and use it to inform instructional decisions.
Units are divided into sections containing lessons related to a specific topic. While the number of sections in a given unit may vary from unit to unit, you will still see the overarching design structure progress across sections. The general structure of a unit is shown below.

From the start of the year, we want to convey the message that engaging in mathematics provides opportunities to be curious, collaborative, and playful. In Unit 1, students are invited to be curious and creative, and teachers have opportunities to notice and build on what students know and can do. Select your grade to see how the design structure is represented across the sections of Unit 1.
In the beginning of Unit 1, students interpret and draw scaled picture graphs and scaled bar graphs to represent data. This builds on their grade 2 experiences with data representation and with skip-counting by 2, 5, and 10.
Next, students make sense of multiplication in terms of equal groups of objects. They use discrete drawings and tape diagrams that show equal groups to represent multiplication. Students then relate these representations to expressions, interpreting them to mean “_____ groups of _____.”
Finally, students relate the idea of equal groups to the structure of an array, a representation introduced in grade 2.
