In this lesson, students interpret points on the graph of a proportional relationship. They make connections between the graph, the equation, and the context modeled by the relationship. Extra attention is given to the meaning of the point on the graph, both in terms of the constant of proportionality in the equation and in terms of a constant rate in the context. As they relate representations and situations, students practice reasoning quantitatively and abstractly (MP2).
In the Warm-up, students think about what situation an unlabeled graph might represent and learn the importance of being precise about saying which quantities are represented on each axis (MP6).
Let’s read stories from the graphs of proportional relationships.
