In this lesson, students examine graphs that have multiple proportional relationships presented on the same set of axes. They compare and interpret the steepness of each graph in terms of the context. First, students use distance-versus-time graphs to decide which person from a group is going the fastest. Then, they work with graphs where the scale is not specified on each axis and realize that they can still use the structure of such graphs to compare rates (MP7).
