In this lesson, students see non-linear associations for the first time and use a Card Sort to distinguish linear and non-linear associations. They visually identify clusters in data and explain that this may be caused by subgroups within a data set exhibiting different trends. At this level, students rely on the structure of visual patterns in scatter plots (MP7) to recognize non-linear associations and clustering rather than quantitative tools.
Let's look for other patterns in data.
Print and cut up cards from the “Scatter Plot City” blackline master. Prepare 1 set of cards for every student.
