In this lesson, students draw a connection between the -intercepts of a graph and the -coordinate of the vertex of the parabola. They use quadratic equations in factored form to find the -intercepts, and then make use of the symmetry found in parabolas to determine where the vertex of the parabola should be. Students use the structure of the points to identify the symmetry and vertex of the graph (MP7). Then they use repeated reasoning to recognize that the location of the vertex is halfway between the -intercepts (MP8).
