These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 5, Lesson 3, support success in that lesson.
In this lesson, students practice using function notation by relating it to their previous understanding of graphs. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students go into more depth interpreting function notation in situations. Students are supported by focusing mostly on coordinate points in this lesson so that a deeper understanding of the situation can be achieved in the Algebra 1 lesson.
Students construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others when they create functions and determine if a graph represents a function (MP3). Attending to precision (MP6) is also important when interpreting function notation as points on a graph.
