These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 5, Lesson 4, support success in that lesson.
In this lesson, students interpret functions in context. First, they concentrate only on connecting an equation to the situation. Then they incorporate a graphical representation of the situation. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students use additional representations, such as tables, to connect to the situation. Students are supported for that work by the slow introduction of additional representations so they can focus on the new information more slowly.
Students must reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2) when they interpret functions in situations and connect representations.
