These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 19, support success in that lesson.
The associated Algebra 1 lesson, which is about contrasting linear and exponential growth, depends on students understanding that a graph might look different if a different graphing window is used. The purpose of this lesson is to give them time to experiment with setting some different graphing windows.
The Warm-up is used to revisit how to use graphing technology to change the graphing window. Students change the graphing window to match different versions of a graph and then consider why people with different motivations might choose different versions of a graph. Finally, students choose a graphing window so that the same given function can tell a different story. Choosing a graphing window for a specific purpose is an aspect of modeling with mathematics (MP4).
