Activity
Intercept Detective
Here are the definitions of some functions, followed by some possible inputs for the functions.
Possible inputs: -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
For each function, decide which input or inputs would give an output of 0.
Here are graphs of , , and . Label each intercept with its coordinates, and be prepared to explain how you know.
graph on left of a line through -5 comma 0 and 0 comma 5. graph in middle of a line through 0 comma -6 and 2 comma 0. on right, parabola with x intercepts = -1 and 3. vertex at 0 comma -3.

Making More Connections
For each function, find the input that would give an output of 0.
Match each graph to a function in the previous question. Be prepared to explain your matches.
graphs A, B, C, D, E, F of 6 lines. A, slope = -1, y intercept = 8. B, slope = 1, y intercept = -10. C, slope = 1, y intercept = 10. D, slope = 2, y intercept = 8. E, slope = 2, y intercept = -8. F, slope = -1, y intercept = -8.
Label the intercepts on each graph with their coordinates.
For each function, find the inputs that would give an output of 0.
Create three different functions whose output is 0 when the input is 7. At least one of your functions must be quadratic.
