Display some example images of kites (an image search of “kite competition” will generate various types of kites). Ask students about their experiences with kites.
For Task Statement 1 display the list of requirements and read the first paragraph aloud. Give students 2 minutes to discuss with a partner what the requirements might mean. Collect and display the results of their discussion. Demonstrate writing one requirement as a more detailed statement—for example, “The customer said the kite must be sturdy. Triangles won't collapse, so each region of the kite design must be a triangle.” Invite groups to record all the results of the brainstorming.
For Task Statement 2 display the list of requirements and read the first paragraph aloud. Give students 2 minutes to discuss with a partner what each requirement means. Invite students to ask any clarifying questions.
For both task statements display this image and tell students these are wooden dowels. Dowels can be attached to each other to build a frame. Fabric is attached to a frame made of dowels to create a kite.
