The purpose of this Warm-up is to elicit the idea that materials can be used to create small versions of objects in the world, which will be useful when students create a model of their classroom in a later activity. While students may notice and wonder many things about this image, the idea that the models in the image represents building and trees is the important discussion point.

The purpose of this activity is for students to make a model of the classroom, using solid shapes. To do this, students need to:
When students model a situation, using a representation such as a building made of blocks, they model with mathematics (MP4). The purpose of the Activity Synthesis is to share some of the objects students chose to represent and how they represented them.
Action and Expression: Internalize Executive Functions. Invite students to plan their model of the classroom. Ask students to think about what objects they are going to represent in their model and what solid shapes they will use to represent those objects.
Supports accessibility for: Organization, Conceptual Processing
If students are unsure which objects in the classroom to represent, consider asking:
The purpose of this activity is for students to revise their classroom models. Students go on a Gallery Walk to see the models of their classmates. Describing their model to their peers and seeing other models helps students develop ideas for how to add to or change their model.
MLR8 Discussion Supports. During the Gallery Walk, invite students to ask “¿Qué me pueden contar sobre lo que hicieron? ¿Qué cosas del salón muestran las figuras?” // “Can you tell me about what you made? What do the shapes show from our classroom?” This gives all students an opportunity to produce language.
Advances: Conversing
“Hoy usamos figuras sólidas para crear un modelo de nuestro salón” // "Today we used solid shapes to create a model of our classroom."

“Al comienzo de la lección, aprendimos que los arquitectos planean y diseñan edificios. Aprendimos que hacen modelos de los edificios antes de construirlos” // "Earlier in the lesson, we learned that architects plan and design buildings. We learned that they make models of the buildings before they are built."
“¿Por qué creen que los arquitectos hacen un modelo del edificio antes de construirlo?” // "Why do you think that architects make a models of a building before it is built?" (It helps them to see what the building will look like. They can see if they want to change anything.)
