In previous lessons, students generated numerical patterns using rules that involved starting with a given number and adding that number to generate each term (start with n, keep adding n). Although this format is used to invite students to make connections to what they know about multiples and factors, they were also encouraged to notice and explain any features that made sense to them.
In preparation for upcoming lessons on multi-digit multiplication, students use rules that include two-digit numbers and rules that involve multiplying each term (for example, start with 2, keep doubling it). Students use what they know about place value and properties of operations to look for and make use of structure as they generate and explain numerical patterns (MP7). Students should be encouraged to notice and explain features that make sense to them, however, monitor for the ways students use what they know about multiplication, factors, multiples, and expressions to describe and explain the features of the patterns they notice.
