Ask students to think about the relationship between events that they have noticed, for example, using a smartphone before bed and not being able to sleep. Is there a causal connection, or is this just a coincidence?
Invite students to share their examples, and record them for all to see. Choose an example, and ask students what kind of experiment they would conduct to find out if there could be a causal relationship. During the discussion, remind students of the tasks involved in running an experiment: assigning subjects to groups, using different treatments on each group, and measuring the outcomes. In this task, students choose a relationship they can study and actually conduct an experiment to gather data.
