In this lesson, students play a game in which the values on the cards are given as logarithms and they must compare the values to see which is greater. Then, they use calculators to approximate logarithms in base 10 and make sense of the approximations from their understanding of logarithms and exponents.
Students look for regularity and use repeated reasoning to compare logarithms during the card game (MP8).
Provide students with access to scientific calculators during the Cool-down.
When printing and cutting up cards from the blackline master, decide whether to use only the first 20 cards, which contain only logarithms with integer values, or to also include the last 10 cards marked “challenge,” which contain logarithms with non-integer values.
