These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 2, Lesson 18, support success in that lesson.
The mathematical purpose of this lesson is for students to write linear equations given any two points on a line. The activities in this lesson build from writing equivalent equations to identify key features to writing equations when given the slope of a line and a point on the line and finally to writing equations given two points on a line. The problems also build within activities from more direct problems involving intercepts to points that are off of each axis. This prepares students for the associated Algebra 1 lesson where students are given key features of linear equations and must determine how many solutions a system of equations will have. As students evaluate what information they have been given and find a path to writing the linear equation, they are making sense of problems and persevering in solving them (MP1). They look for and make use of structure when determining what they have and what they need in order to solve the problems (MP7).
Technology isn't required for this lesson, but there are opportunities for students to choose to use appropriate technology to solve problems. We recommend making technology available.
