These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 3, Lesson 2, support success in that lesson.
The mathematical purpose of this lesson is for students to practice thinking about percentages as various rates within a categorical data set. Previously, students worked with categorical data in a two-way table, and practiced identifying a value that represents a specific category or a combination of multiple categories. This lesson prepares students to create and interpret relative frequency tables in the associated Algebra 1 lesson. When students create relative frequency tables, they must differentiate between considering rows, columns, or the total number of participants for the rate needed to calculate the percentages. Students look for and make use of a structure (MP7) when they create two-way tables and use them to interpret data.
