This lesson is designed to activate students’ prior knowledge about transformations and remind students how to describe and perform transformations in preparation for the next lesson.
Students begin by describing transformations informally. Then they take turns in a Card Sort activity designed to remind students of formal transformation language and what transformations look like without a coordinate grid in place. As students trade roles during the Card Sort, they will construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (MP3). Then students perform and describe transformations. Students have the opportunity to choose appropriate tools when they sketch their transformations (MP5).
Technology isn't required for this lesson, but there are opportunities for students to choose to use appropriate technology to solve problems. We recommend making technology available.
