In this lesson, students describe and compare the properties of different three-dimensional solids. First, students are introduced to three-dimensional solids with images of familiar objects. Students name similarities and differences between the objects and are encouraged to refine their ideas with mathematical language (MP6). Next, students review the names and features of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes and consider the relationships between them. It is intentional that students do not calculate the volume of solids, because the focus of the activity is on students recalling language and practicing communicating with their new classmates. Students will have the opportunity to practice calculating volumes in a later lesson.
