In this lesson, students continue their focus on understanding the effect of scale factors on graphs. They begin visualizing the effect on a graph of multiplying the input of a function by a scale factor. Then, students identify and contrast the effect of scale factors on the input and output of functions.
Students use multiple representations to make connections between the different representations of functions. They see the effect of scale factors in different ways using graphs, tables, and equations. Throughout the lesson, encourage students to compare the language they use to describe a graphical transformation with transformations of specific points and with algebraic transformations of the equations (MP6).
There is an optional activity that gives students an opportunity for extra practice scaling the input of a function within a familiar context of the volume of solids.
