The mathematical goal of the lesson is for students to practice recognizing the purposes of and differences among sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies. Students also have the chance to design their own experimental study. When students take turns listening to their partner’s thinking and explaining their own thinking about sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies, students are explaining their reasoning and critiquing the reasoning of others (MP3).
