The mathematical purpose of this lesson is to estimate the population mean with an associated margin of error, using sample means from random samples. Students take what they have learned about estimating population proportions and apply similar techniques to estimating a population mean from sample data. When students make connections between estimating the margin of error for population means and for population proportions, they are looking for and making use of structure (MP7).
Each student will need a number cube for the print version of the activity. Alternatively, devices that can generate random integers between 1 and 6 can be used.
