This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students solved several different types of story problems. In this lesson, the story problems either have extra, unnecessary information or not enough information to solve the problem. Students group the story problems into one of these two categories. They then cross out the unnecessary information and solve the problems. Students also see that sometimes a story can have extra information and also not have all of the necessary information to solve the problem.
What part of the lesson went really well today in terms of students’ learning? What did you do that made that part go well?
