The purpose of this Warm-up is to elicit the idea that many mathematical questions can be asked about gardens, which will be useful when students create story problems about gardens in a later activity. While students may notice and wonder many things about this image, mathematical questions about the garden are the important discussion points.

The purpose of this activity is for students to write story problems that will answer the questions they came up with in the previous activity. Students decide on numbers that are appropriate for the context of their stories. The story problems should require addition or subtraction in order to solve. When students identify information they need to know to solve a problem and make assumptions about information not given in a situation, they model with mathematics (MP4).
// “Today we asked questions about a situation and thought about the information we need to answer the questions. We wrote story problems that would help us answer the questions using addition or subtraction. What was challenging about writing these story problems?” (It was hard to decide what numbers to use that would make sense for the problem.)
