Tell students to close their books or devices (or to keep them closed). Display the solids and their formulas for all to see. Give students 1 minute of quiet think time, and ask them to be prepared to share at least one thing they notice and one thing they wonder. Record and display 3–5 students’ responses without editing or commentary for all to see. If possible, record the relevant reasoning on or near the images and formulas.

The goal is to make sure students understand how to break composite figures into familiar three-dimensional solids to find the volume. Begin by inviting 2–4 previously selected students to share their sketches and how they got started determining the volumes. In particular, focus on how students broke apart the given shapes and determined unknown dimensions in order to calculate the volumes.
