The standards call for students to demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 10 by the end of grade 1. The purpose of this lesson is for students to identify any sums they are not yet fluent with, and work on activities that will help them build fluency. The phrase “from memory” is used in the lesson activities as a way to help students distinguish between sums they can recall very quickly and those that take more time to find. For the purposes of this section, it is not important for students to accurately distinguish between sums they recall from memory and those they find with fluency using a strategy. It is important for students to identify the sums that take them longer to find and to develop strategies for finding the value of these sums with increased fluency.
If students need additional support with the concepts in this lesson, refer back to Unit 3, Section A in the curriculum materials.
