In this lesson, students identify parallel and intersecting lines in the world around them—in a map of a neighborhood, in the letters of the alphabet, in some part of their classroom, and in familiar logos. They apply their understanding to represent and draw a part of their environment that shows such lines, and then create a new logo with these types of lines. The Activity Synthesis of this lesson further highlights the presence and necessity of parallel and intersecting lines in real life.
In future lessons, students will use their understanding of lines that intersect to talk about angles.
