The purpose of this activity is for students to write expressions to show how students composed and decomposed numbers in the previous activity. When students model a situation using a representation such as an expression, they model with mathematics (MP4).

“¿Cómo decidieron mostrar cómo empacar la fruta en la lonchera? ¿Usaron objetos, hicieron un dibujo o hicieron otra cosa?” // “How did you choose to show how you would pack the fruit in the box? Did you use objects or draw a picture or do something else?” (I used connecting cubes. I drew a picture.)
“Si usaron objetos, ¿cómo los ayudaron esos objetos a mostrar cómo empacar la fruta?” // “If you used objects, how did the objects help you show how you would pack the box?” (I used objects because I could show the bananas using yellow connecting cubes and the apples using green connecting cubes.)
“Si hicieron un dibujo, ¿cómo los ayudó dibujar una imagen a mostrar cómo empacar la fruta?” // “If you drew a picture, how did drawing a picture help you show how you would pack the box?” (I drew a picture so that I could draw each fruit and write how many of each fruit would be in the box.)
“Si hicieron otra cosa, ¿cómo los ayudó eso a mostrar cómo empacar la fruta?” // “If you did something else, how did it help you show how you would pack the box?”
