What do you notice?
What do you wonder?
Use objects, drawings, numbers, or words to show packing snacks.
The purpose of this activity is for students to write expressions to show how students composed and decomposed numbers in the previous activity. When students model a situation using a representation such as an expression, they model with mathematics (MP4).

“How did you choose to show how you would pack the fruit in the box? Did you use objects or draw a picture or do something else?” (I used connecting cubes. I drew a picture.)
“If you used objects, how did the objects help you show how you would pack the box?” (I used objects, because I could show the bananas using yellow connecting cubes and the apples using green connecting cubes.)
“If you drew a picture, how did drawing a picture help you show how you would pack the box?” (I drew a picture, so I could draw each fruit and write how many of each fruit would be in the box.)
“If you did something else, how did it help you show how you would pack the box?”
