In the previous lessons, students solved different types of story problems that involved an unknown addend. Students used objects, drawings, and numbers to represent story problems, including expressions. They made sense of equations and related them to story problems and solution strategies. In this lesson, students prepare to write equations to represent story problems on their own. Students match equations to story problems and explain how an equation matches the quantities and the unknown. The story problems in this lesson include Add To, Result Unknown, Take From, Result Unknown, Put Together/Take Apart, Total Unknown, and Compare, Difference Unknown.
Matching equations to Put Together/Take Apart problems is emphasized in the lesson to support students as they continue to build their understanding about the relationship between addition and subtraction and their understanding of subtraction as solving an unknown addend problem.
Reflect on how comfortable your students are asking questions of you and of each other. What can you do to encourage students to ask questions?
