The purpose of this activity is for students to learn Stage 3 of the How Close? center. Each student picks 7 cards and chooses 4 of them to create 2 two-digit numbers. Each student adds the 2 numbers and writes an equation. The student whose sum is closest to 100 wins a point for the round. Before playing, students should remove cards that show 10 from their deck and set them aside.

• Display seven cards.
• If needed, remind students that we need to choose four cards to make 2 two-digit numbers and then find the sum of those 2 numbers.
• “What numbers would you make to get as close as possible to 100?”

The purpose of this activity is for students to choose from activities that focus on two-digit numbers. 

Students choose any previously introduced stage from these centers:

• Target Numbers
• Five in a Row
• Get Your Numbers in Order

• “What did you practice and get better at in your center?” (I worked on adding numbers by composing a ten.)
