Preparation
Lesson Purpose
The purpose of this lesson is for students to practice adding and subtracting within 100 and representing addition and subtraction on the number line.
Lesson Narrative
This lesson is optional because it is an opportunity for extra practice that not all classes may need. First, students learn Stage 1 of the Jump the Line center. In this new center, students take turns making strategic choices about numbers to add or subtract in order to reach target numbers. Then students can continue working on Jump the Line or choose between two previously introduced centers focused on addition and subtraction.
- Represent addition and subtraction within 100 on the number line.
- Let’s practice adding and subtracting using the number line.

- Each group of 2 needs 5 paper clips.
