This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students added, subtracted, and compared numbers within 100. They represented two-digit numbers with a point on a number line. They also learned to measure length in standard units. In this lesson, students use each of these skills to determine what rides at an amusement park different people are tall enough to ride. Given height requirements, students use a number line to compare these requirements to the height of different people. Students then plan a day at the park for a family based on the height requirements and other given constraints.
