Write Expressions and Equations to Represent Arrays
Grade 2
Preparation
Lesson Narrative
In a previous lesson, students matched arrays to expressions with equal addends. In this lesson, students write equations with equal addends to represent an array as the sum of the number of objects in each row or the sum of the number of objects in each column.
Action and Expression
MLR2
Create arrays and represent the objects in the array with an equation with equal addends.
What connections did students make between the structure of an array and the structure of the addition expressions and equations they wrote? What questions did you ask to help make the connections more visible?

2.NBT.A.2
Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.See standard 1.OA.6 for a list of mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
