This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students solved story problems and matched expressions to story problems. In the first activity, students consider a story problem that includes additional information and determine which information is necessary to answer the question. Then students tell their own story problem to match an expression. Students think about what information they do and do not need to include when telling their story problem.
If there is additional time, students can participate in centers from the unit.

As you finish up this unit, reflect on the norms and activities that have supported each student in learning math. List ways you have seen each student grow as a young mathematician throughout this work. List ways you have seen yourself grow as a teacher. What will you continue to do in the next unit? What will you improve upon in the next unit?
