This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students counted and counted out groups of up to 20 objects. They also counted and drew out groups of up to 20 images. In this lesson, students practice counting out objects and drawing images as they design a garden and determine how many and what types of vegetables they will plant. As students make a model of the garden, they may use what they have learned to organize the vegetables. For example, they may arrange the vegetables in rows of 5 or 10.
If there is additional time, students can participate in centers from the unit.
