The mathematical purpose of this lesson is for students to recognize that two expressions can make up a product and to practice using a rectangle diagram for multiplying two sums. Students consider riddles in which they must find values whose product is a given value and whose sum is another given value. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students begin the process of rewriting quadratic expressions in factored form. Gaining fluency with the rectangle diagram will help students use the method to factor quadratics. Students look for and make use of structure (MP7) when they use the sums and products of expressions to find an area. Students model with mathematics (MP4) when they use a context of framing pictures to multiply binomials.
