These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 8, Lesson 18, support success in that lesson.
In this lesson, students discuss methods for checking their solutions to a solved equation and focus on the order of the steps to solving a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students examine common errors and verify solutions to quadratic equations. The work of this lesson supports students by focusing on a few methods for checking solutions and the order of steps needed to use the quadratic formula. Students have the opportunity to construct viable arguments (MP3) when they explain what steps should be taken to solve and check the solution for a quadratic equation.
Technology isn't required for this lesson, but there are opportunities for students to choose to use appropriate technology to solve problems. We recommend making technology available.
