These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 8, Lesson 17, support success in that lesson.
The purpose of the lesson is to interpret equations in terms of the situation. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students use the quadratic formula to solve equations in context. The work of this lesson supports students to interpret the questions and set up equations that can be solved using the quadratic formula. Students reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2) when they use a graph or equation to interpret meaning in a given situation. Students also have the opportunity to use appropriate tools strategically (MP5) when they graph the quadratic equations.
Technology isn't required for this lesson, but there are opportunities for students to choose to use appropriate technology to solve problems. We recommend making technology available.
