These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 8, Lesson 16, support success in that lesson.
In this lesson, students identify coefficients of terms in a quadratic equation in preparation for using the quadratic formula to solve equations. In the next activity, students solve quadratic equations using any method they choose. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students learn about the quadratic formula as a method for solving quadratic equations. The work of this lesson supports students in recognizing parts of the quadratic formula as well as in noticing benefits and difficulties in using the methods they already know. Students look for and make use of structure (MP7) when they rewrite quadratic equations in standard form and identify each term.
