These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 8, Lesson 22, support success in that lesson.
In this activity, students use equations and graphs to compare the values of a function with different -coordinates. In the associated Algebra 1 lesson, students use the vertex form of a quadratic equation to find the maximum or minimum. This work supports students by focusing on the values of the equation and determining which is greater.
Students look for and make use of structure (MP7) when they describe the information they know about a quadratic graph without labeled axes. Technology isn't required for this lesson, but there are opportunities for students to choose to use appropriate technology to solve problems. We recommend making technology available. Students may choose to use appropriate tools strategically (MP5) if they recognize that technology may help in graphing a given quadratic equation.
