The purpose of this activity is for students to continue to make sense of equations with a symbol for an unknown addend and to compare strategies for determining the number that makes an equation true. Students continue to share and compare addition strategies, including those based on counting on.
Although it is recommended to focus on counting on strategies in the Lesson Synthesis, monitor for other strategies students may use. For example, some students may represent the total and separate the known addend, count back from the total to the known addend, or use a known fact.
MLR8 Discussion Supports. Synthesis: Create a visual display of student strategies for finding the number that makes an equation true. As students share their strategies, annotate the display to illustrate connections. For example, next to each representation of a strategy, write labels to represent each number in the equation, including the unknown.
Advances: Speaking, Representing.
