This lesson is optional, because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students partitioned rectangles and circles into two or four equal pieces. They learned that two equal pieces are called “halves” and four equal pieces are called “fourths” or “quarters.” In this lesson, students draw shapes and partition them into halves or fourths in order to model objects in their environment.
