In previous lessons, students saw how coordinates are an effective tool for locating and describing points on the coordinate grid. In this lesson, they examine how points sharing the same vertical or horizontal coordinate are related. For example, the points , , and all have 1 as their second coordinate. Students see that they all lie on a horizontal line. Students study points that lie on the horizontal or vertical axes and see 0 as a possible value for a coordinate.
Action and Expression
MLR8
Draw and label points in the coordinate plane.
Generalize (orally and in writing) that when two points have the same first (second) coordinate, they lie on the same vertical (resp. horizontal) line.
Ubiquemos y nombremos puntos en la cuadrícula de coordenadas.

5.G.A.1
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g.,-axis and -coordinate, -axis and -coordinate).
