This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students composed and decomposed numbers to 10, both in the context of story problems and using math tools. In this lesson, students choose how to pack a box with two different types of fruit. Then they write an expression to represent how many of each fruit is packed in the box.
If there is additional time, students can participate in centers from the unit.
