This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students described and built objects with solid shapes. Students used positional words to describe the locations of shapes and identified solid shapes in the environment. After creating a model of the classroom, students take a Gallery Walk to look at different models and practice describing their model. Then they return to their model and make changes or additions based on what they have observed in the other classroom models.
If there is additional time, students can participate in centers from the unit.
