The purpose of this Warm-up is to elicit the idea that materials can be used to create small versions of objects in the world, which will be useful when students create a model of their classroom in a later activity. While students may notice and wonder many things about this image, the idea that the models in the image represents building and trees is the important discussion point.
What do you notice?
What do you wonder?
The purpose of this activity is for students to make a model of the classroom, using solid shapes. To do this, students need to:
When students model a situation, using a representation such as a building made of blocks, they model with mathematics (MP4). The purpose of the Activity Synthesis is to share some of the objects students chose to represent and how they represented them.
The purpose of this activity is for students to revise their classroom models. Students go on a Gallery Walk to see the models of their classmates. Describing their model to their peers and seeing other models helps students develop ideas for how to add to or change their model.
"Today we used solid shapes to create a model of our classroom."

"Earlier in the lesson, we learned that architects plan and design buildings. We learned that they make models of the buildings before they are built."
"Why do you think that architects make a models of a building before it is built?" (It helps them see what the building will look like. They can see if they want to change anything.)
