This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
In previous lessons, students found the values of groups of bills and solved one- and two-step word problems involving money. In this lesson, students continue to solve problems involving dollar amounts in the context of spending money at the fair. Students first look at how someone else spent their money and consider whether or not they should continue to spend or save their money. Then students make decisions about how they would spend their own money. They decide how much they would spend, what they would spend it on, and explain the reasoning for the decisions they made.
