This lesson is optional because it does not address any new mathematical content standards. This lesson does provide students with an opportunity to apply precursor skills of mathematical modeling (MP4).
Throughout this unit, students have connected numbers and quantities. They have used objects and drawings to represent numbers and have also written numbers to show how many there are in a group. In warm-ups, students have considered if there are enough and compared quantities and numbers in the context of setting the table. In this lesson, students consider what information they need to know to set the table for a meal and represent this information using objects, drawings, numbers, or words.
If there is additional time, students can participate in centers from the unit.
